Nostalgia carries New Kids on the Block at final SoCal stop

There are few greater things in life than when a woman is made to feel like she’s 15 again — to be time-warped back to a world where the walls in her room were covered with pictures ripped out of Teen Beat, and the first true love in her life was a Kid she’d never actually met.

Thousands of 15-year-olds at heart were reminded of those simpler days Friday night at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, where New Kids on the BlockJordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jonathan Knight — put on another fun, bubblegum pop show, expected to be their last Southern California stop on the boy band’s wildly successful reunion tour. Almost two solid hours of hit after hit found the almost entirely female crowd on their feet and singing … no, belting along to every word.

Next ‘No Service Fee Wednesday’ offers a hot dog and soda

July 6th, 2009, 1:46 pm by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

livenationStill haven’t been lured to take part in Live Nation’s “No Service Fee Wednesday” specials? Still think there must be a catch, and that the concert promoter is just finding new ways of hiding extra costs?

Well, would a Coke and a dog change your mind?

That’s what’s being thrown into the offer this week.

For 24 hours, starting Wednesday at 12:01 a.m., Live Nation will offer an all-in $29.99 rate (no extra fees) on lawn tickets at all of its amphitheaters nationwide — locally including Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in Chula Vista and San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore.

That would include this weekend’s trio of shows at Verizon — New Kids on the Block on Friday, the Blazed & Confused Tour featuring Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dogg on Saturday, and 311 with Ziggy Marley on Sunday — as well as Sunday’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with Slayer and Marilyn Manson at San Manuel.

Just what does the all-in price get you? The ticket and parking, of course … but, n0 joke, a hot dog and a soda at the show, too. In other words, a fairly comprehensive concert experience for a penny under $30. The only thing missing is a tour T-shirt.

Again, note: the promotion ends when the clock strikes midnight and Wednesday becomes Thursday.

Never-ending New Kids on the Block tour adds O.C. date

March 30th, 2009, 12:22 pm by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Just how many times are these guys gonna play Southern California? As many as it takes until every screaming fan has been drained of cash?

Already the reunited, ridiculously popular New Kids on the Block have a Hollywood Palladium show slated for April 18, which brings them back to L.A. after several shows at Staples Center and Nokia Theatre last fall. Now, having revealed plans for their Full Service Summer Tour, Jordan, Joey, Donnie, Danny and Jonathan have announced their first O.C. appearance since regrouping — July 10 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine.

The tour kicks off May 28 in Atlanta and also will stop July 11 at the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas. Early dates of the outing go on sale this Friday, April 3. Stay tuned for Verizon on-sale info.

New shows: Flight of the Conchords, Lily Allen, Louis C.K.

February 3rd, 2009, 10:28 pm by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

It’s been all music-music- music this week, so let’s start this one off with some comedy shows — ones at venues not typically used for funny business.

Flight of the Conchords, the Grammy-winning Kiwi duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement known stateside for their eponymous HBO series, will headline May 24 at the Greek Theatre, as well as May 22 at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Arj Barker opens both shows. Tickets for the Greek, $39.50, go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.; tickets for the Bowl, a dollar less, go on sale two hours later.

(Also at the Bowl: yet another New Kids on the Block appearance, with Jabbawockeez opening, April 17, $39-$89, on sale Saturday at 1 p.m.)

Meanwhile, comedian Louis C.K. has a bigger-than-usual gig coming up, March 27 at the Wiltern. Those tickets go on sale Saturday at 10.

Also at the Wiltern: British star Lily Allen, whose sophomore effort, It’s Not Me, It’s You, arrives Feb. 10, will play the L.A. theater on April 2, with Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head (my new favorite band name) opening, on sale Saturday at noon … and a co-headlining show with Black Label Society and Sevendust, with Dope and Cycle of Pain warming up, May 2, on sale Saturday at 10.

By the way, all of the above Wiltern shows (even Louis C.K.’s) as well as coming dates from Jimmy Buffett at Verizon and Modest Mouse at the Hollywood Palladium — and Bamboozle Left — will be sold exclusively through Live Nation’s site or by phone at 877-598-6671.

New shows: Bloc Party, M83, Tindersticks, David Archuleta

January 27th, 2009, 1:34 am by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

The big news this week — other than the eagerly awaited reveal of this year’s Coachella lineup (which should arrive anytime now, right?) — came from Bruce Springsteen. On the eve of the release of the Boss’ 16th studio effort (the excellent Working on a Dream), Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime star and his faithful E Street Band will return to Los Angeles Sports Arena on April 15. Tickets go on sale Monday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m.

But there are surely plenty of people who couldn’t care less about Springsteen and are more excited by the beefing up of the renovated Hollywood Palladium’s roster.

Four new shows have been announced: metal band Lamb of God with As I Lay Dying, Children of Bodom, God Forbid and Municipal Waste, April 3, on sale Friday at 10 a.m. … fascinating instrumentalists Ratatat, April 4, on sale at 5 p.m. Thursday … British band Bloc Party, led by Kele Okereke (pictured, at the sadly defunct Indie 103.1’s holiday bash Wreck the Halls last month), April 15, on sale Friday at 10 a.m. … and yet another appearance (the smallest yet) from the reunited New Kids on the Block, April 18, on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Tindersticks, that moody ensemble with a cult following, is back after five years away, touting a new album, The Hungry Saw. The band plays March 13 at the Music Box at the Fonda in Hollywood, on sale Saturday.

Get up-close and personal with American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta when the little guy with the big voice comes to the Glass House in Pomona on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17, if you forgot). Tickets, $23, go on sale at noon Friday. Also at the club and on sale at that time: Plants and Animals, March 11, $10.

This should really be something: French electronic duo M83, whose fifth effort (Saturdays = Youth) was one of the better albums of 2008, will join forces with the L.A. Philharmonic March 7 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. It’s the group’s first live performance with symphonic backing. Tickets, $28-$37, go on sale Friday at 10.

Death Cab for Cutie has announced a spring tour that stops April 29 at Rimac Arena in San Diego. Seeing as the band is in Sacramento two days before and Austin two days after, I wouldn’t expect any O.C. or L.A. play this time.

Comedian, Real Time host and Religulous star Bill Maher will headline March 28 at Gibson Amphitheatre. Those tickets go on sale Saturday at 1.

New at House of Blues Anaheim: a second visit from Tricky (even though his first didn’t garner many attendees), March 24, on sale Saturday at 10 … New Found Glory with Bayside and Set Your Goals, March 27, on sale Thursday at 10 … Loverboy, March 1, on sale now … Colombian outfit Aterciopelados, April 16 … and long-running reggae act UB40, April 19. Those last two also go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The band beloved for its cover of Neil Diamond’s “Red Red Wine” also play April 23 at House of Blues Sunset Strip. Also slated for that West Hollywood club: the Pat Travers Band, Feb. 24. Both of those gigs go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.
