Three tunes into Saturday night’s show at Honda Center, just after “Dreams” but before “I Know I’m Not Wrong,” singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham stated the obvious in one of his long song intros: “Fleetwood Mac has had a fairly complex and convoluted emotional history. Sometimes we take breaks. Sometimes we take long breaks. But every time we get together it’s different.”
Sure enough, it was a different sort of Mac (looser yet often fiercer) and a different sort of Mac show (a chatty journey through the past) on display in Anaheim, the 60-something Hall of Famers’ first of several Southwest stops, including a May 28 homecoming at Staples Center and a May 31 gig at San Diego Sports Arena.
Yet, though there were nods to Mac work beyond Buckingham-Nicks — a peppy “Say You Love Me” for still-retired Christine McVie, a raucous “Oh Well” as a nod to the group’s roots in heavy blues-rock — this was essentially “The Stevie & Lindsey Show,” complete with hand-holding and hugs and often fiery versions of all those Rumours songs about their failed romance.
