Poll: Is Dane Cook funny?

August 26th, 2008, 9:35 pm · 10 Comments · posted by Kelli Skye Fadroski

danecookweb.jpgIs Dane Cook even funny anymore? Was he ever really funny in the first place?

The more I go out to clubs and see real talent, the more I ask myself these questions. Has this comedian-turned- “movie star” lost his edge? Did he ever really have any “edge”?

Sure, right now he might still be able to bring in a crowd at Madison Square Garden for one of his comedy-rock shows. But back in the day so could Andrew Dice Clay, and look at him now - fat, balding, unable to sell out even a few nights at the Improv.

My friend Ian brings up a great point: When Dane Cook burst onto the scene, his infectious energy had everyone smitten. People soon realized, however, that the actual jokes behind all of that screaming and arm flailing weren’t all that funny — mostly they were just long rants without punchlines.

And now that he’s released several lame films, doesn’t his star seem to be fading? Have Good Luck Chuck and Employee of the Month rendered him humor-free?Does Cook have any real staying power? Or is he another victim of “the Chevy Chase effect” — funny at first, especially with a younger generation, then terminally unfunny ever after?

One can’t help but wonder if his new film, My Best Friend’s Girl, will be the nail in the coffin of his career as an actual stand-up comedian? At a certain point, let’s be honest: Are we laughing AT him or are we laughing WITH him?

Let’s discuss …

THANK YOU!! I don’t understand why people still find him funny, he’s a sell-out! He was funny 7-8 years ago. You can’t blame him on all of it, part of the blame for him not being funny anymore is the people that used and killed his jokes. They kept saying it until it just became annoying. His new stuff is the same as his old stuff, i was hoping for some new material but its the same thing. You show me someone that finds Dane Cook funny and ill show you someone that has never or gone once to the Improv. These people also find Jeff Dunham funny, HES NOT FUNNY! The same for Russell Peters, and Stephan Lynch! These guys are sick jokes or a comedian. Go to the Improv on Tuesdays, youll find alot of great and talented comedians.

We were just talking about this at work. I think he’s really funny. He’s actually more funny when he uses less. He uses a lot of profanity to emphasize his jokes, but his delivery and action are funny without the vulgarity, You can even get the actions when listening to his CD’s. Dane, slow down on the profanity and vulgarity! SUFI. I was in my kitchen, cleaning a dish!

I cant believe there is a poll for this? Dane Cook is funny as hell! I have his stand-up acts on CD’s and listen to them in my car regularly. If you want to put a poll up then why don’t you ask if Will Ferrill is funny because his movies are consistently stupid. Same lame guy in all his movies they just give each one a different name but they’re all the same stupid guy.

  5. Jackyl Says:

I love the guy. These aren’t his first bouts in the movies. I just saw his as part of some Asian Kung Fu gang who is trying to conquer a bunch of Asian acrobats. The concept of Dane Cook in an Asian Kung Fu gang was enough for me to sit up and watch the c*&p at 1 in the morning. Love the standup. His movie choices weren’t the best but you have to start somewhere. Loved him in Mr. Brooks. He is also easy on the eyes.

  6. Alayna Says:

    sometimes he`s funny.
that Kool Aid & Creepy Guy at work was funny.
    other than that-
    i just don`t know… “/

All blow, no show. When they hype settled and people looked for actual talent, nothing but the sound of crickets returned. Sort of like Sarah Silverman. Hype gone, talent, so-so, got her 15 mins because she was involved with Jimmy Kimmel. Other than that, not much real talent.

  8. Kelly Says:

Dane Cook IS without a doubt very funny, but he has put himself into the wrong movies, starting with Tourgasm. He can totally make a comeback.

  9. Kelli Skye Says:

Hey, hey now…Sarah Silverman is WAY more funny than Dane Cook!!! Have you seen her show on Comedy Central - MAGIC!!!!!!

  10. KC Says:

Dane Cook is so funny. He has a lot of talent and heart. Really good looking, too! I am definitely a fan.
