It was brave, it was brilliant – it was a cathartic performance unlike any I’ve ever seen Dave Matthews Band give. It had to be, of course. How the group even managed to show up Tuesday night at Staples Center when founding member and sax man LeRoi Moore had died only hours earlier from complications involving serious injuries he suffered in an ATV accident in late June — well, beats me where they found the strength to soldier on. That they did — and let the spirit move them to places we rarely see mainstream icons like this tread anymore — was not only astonishing, it was a tribute to the inexplicable and immense healing power of live music. They came together this way with Moore; it would make sense they’d see him out just the same.
